Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and chemotherapy, as the primary treatment, often causes side effects, particularly fatigue. Complementary therapies, such as massage therapy, have been reported to reduce fatigue and pain and improve patient comfort. Therefore, this literature review was conducted to examine the effectiveness of massage therapy in reducing fatigue in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Methods: To identify the effects of massage therapy, an online literature search strategy was used, utilizing electronic databases such as PubMed and Science Direct. This review design adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The literature reviewed covered the period 2015 to 2025. Ten articles met the criteria and were reviewed.

Results: Of the 10 reviewed articles, massage therapy is an effective intervention for reducing pain and fatigue.

Conclusion: Massage therapy is the most widely studied intervention and has shown consistent results in reducing pain and fatigue levels. Therefore, massage therapy-based interventions can be considered a safe and applicable complementary therapy in the care of cancer patients.
